What is Lima known for?

Lima is Peru’s capital and largest city, a coastal metropolis where pre-Columbian ruins, Spanish colonial churches, and award-winning restaurants coexist. It’s known for:

  • Gastronomy: Home to some of the world’s top restaurants like Central and Maido
  • History: From the 1,500-year-old Huaca Pucllana to the colonial heart of the Spanish Empire
  • Culture & Art: Murals in Barranco, colonial museums in the Historic Centre
  • Beaches & Boardwalks: Especially in Miraflores, where paragliders sail over the Pacific

Where is Lima and how do you get there?

Lima is located on the central west coast of South America, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It’s home to Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) — the main gateway for international flights to Peru. From the airport, it takes around 40–60 minutes to reach tourist-friendly districts like Miraflores or Barranco.

When is the best time to visit Lima?

Without a doubt, the best time to visit Lima is during spring and summer, from October to April.
These months bring blue skies, pleasant temperatures, and the kind of sunshine that makes everything — from sunsets to seafood — feel more alive. Whether you're strolling through parks or enjoying views from the cliffs, this is the season to fall in love with Lima.

Local tip: If you want to enjoy walking tours, paragliding, and open-air dining by the sea, make sure to visit during the sunny season.

What are the safest and most popular areas to stay in Lima?

Let’s keep it real. Lima is a big city, and while some areas are amazing, others aren’t ideal for tourists. Here are the most recommended neighborhoods, known for safety, charm, and great access to everything you’ll want to experience.

AreaWhat makes it great
MirafloresOcean views, top hotels, great restaurants, very walkable
BarrancoArtsy, colorful, fun nightlife and authentic local life
San IsidroGreen parks, museums, elegant cafés and calm vibes

What about Lima’s Historic Centre?

Yes, the colonial buildings and main square are worth visiting during the day and preferably with a guide. But we do not recommend staying there. It’s not safe at night and some areas can feel uncomfortable even in daylight.

Travel smart: Stick to Miraflores, Barranco, or San Isidro for your hotel. You’ll be more relaxed, close to the ocean, and have access to the best Lima has to offer.
