As of June 1st, 2025, Lima’s brand-new international terminal is officially open — a massive step forward in Peru’s ability to welcome travelers from around the world. This new terminal at Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is now three times larger than the previous one, with a modern layout, improved services, and a travel experience that rivals the best in Latin America.
At Peruvian Sunrise, we want to make sure you’re fully informed before arriving in or departing from Lima. Below, we share everything you need to know — including how the terminal works, what’s new, what to expect, and tips to make your arrival and departure smooth and stress-free.
What’s Different? Layout and Organization by Floors
One of the biggest improvements is the completely new terminal layout. In the old airport, the first floor was used for both check-in and departures, and the upper levels were shared by arrivals, connections, and international departures. This often caused confusion and crowding.
Now, each floor of the new terminal has a dedicated purpose, making everything more streamlined:
- 3rd Floor: International departures only: Blocks B, C and D. This is where you'll check in and go through security and immigration before heading to your gate.
- 2nd Floor: Connections (Domestic and international): Block A. For travelers transiting through Lima to other destinations.
- 1st Floor: International arrivals: where you’ll pass through immigration, collect your luggage, and meet your Peruvian Sunrise driver.
This separation allows for easier navigation, less congestion, and a calmer travel environment.
Arriving in Lima
If you’re flying into Lima, expect a clean, organized, and well-signposted airport:
- Immigration is usually fast and straightforward if you have your documents ready.
- Baggage claim may take some time depending on peak hours, but staff are present to assist.
- After customs, you’ll exit into a large arrivals hall where your Peruvian Sunrise driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel or final destination.
Travel Time and When to Leave your Hotel for the New Lima Airport
Because Peru receives a high volume of international visitors, we strongly recommend the following:
- Arrive at the airport 4 hours before your international flight to avoid delays or last-minute issues.
- Leave your hotel 1 to 1.5 hours before that, especially during high-traffic hours:
Morning: 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM
Evening: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Even though the ride from Miraflores to the airport usually takes around 1 hour, Lima traffic is highly unpredictable. Planning ahead allows you to relax once you arrive at the terminal.
Departing from Lima
The new departure process is smooth and stress-free:
- Check-in counters are modern and spacious. Lines can form, especially for luggage drop-off, but the process is fast and organized.
- Security and immigration are efficient, with clear signs in English and Spanish.
- The departure lounge is bright, comfortable, and filled with restaurants, cafes, and shops — a great place to unwind before your flight.
*Tip: Prices in the departure zone (post-security) are listed in USD and are aligned with international pricing. Shops in the arrivals area (before customs) are generally more budget-friendly.
Amenities: Yes, there are Bathrooms!
Yes, bathrooms are available on every floor, and they are clearly marked and kept clean. Although the restroom and gate areas are more minimal in design, they are fully functional and traveler-friendly.
