Travelers planning to visit Machu Picchu may soon notice a smoother ticket-buying process, as Peru’s Ministry of Culture has introduced changes to the way last-minute entrance tickets are sold in Aguas Calientes.
The update comes after months of complaints from domestic and international visitors who said they faced long overnight waits, confusion and lack of information when they tried to get tickets on the spot at the entrance to the historic sanctuary. Authorities now say that travelers need to use a new registration process to reserve on-site tickets up to three days in advance before they can buy the final tickets. The goal is to reduce crowding, improve organization and give visitors more security during their stay in Cusco.
Under the new system, travelers arriving in Machu Picchu Pueblo will first register for an available entry date and then return at their assigned time to complete payment and collect their tickets. Officials say this should help avoid the long lines that had become common during high-demand periods, especially among travelers without advance online bookings.
Machu Picchu remains open as usual, and online ticket sales continue through official channels for travelers who prefer to secure their visit before arriving in Peru. The new on-site process is mainly designed for last-minute visitors and those making flexible travel plans in the Sacred Valley.
