One of Barranco’s most iconic landmarks, the Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) in Lima, Peru, has closed to pedestrian traffic starting February 3, 2026 for a six-month restoration and conservation project.
The historic wooden bridge, a symbol of Lima’s bohemian Barranco district and a frequent stop for both local and international visitors, will remain closed for approximately 180 days (until August) to allow for comprehensive restoration works. The project aims to reinforce the structure, replace deteriorated wooden planks, restore historic lamp posts, and install improved LED lighting to enhance safety and nighttime visibility, all while preserving the bridge’s cultural character.
This restoration comes after more than a decade without major maintenance; years of continuous use had caused wear to key structural components. Authorities say the closure is necessary for visitor safety and to protect the bridge’s long-term preservation.
During the closure, signposted pedestrian detours will be available for those walking toward the Bajada de los Baños and the Costa Verde beaches, ensuring access to the area remains open even while the work is underway.
Built in 1876, the Puente de los Suspiros is not only a historic structure but also a cultural icon, loved by visitors for its romantic charm and deeply connected to Barranco’s identity.
