Peru Declares State of Emergency in 134 Districts Due to Heavy Rains

The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in 134 districts across eight regions after intense seasonal rains exceeded local response capacities.

The 60-day emergency measure, published in the official gazette El Peruano, aims to speed up exceptional actions to reduce risk and support rehabilitation efforts in the most vulnerable coastal and highland areas.

The decree covers districts in the regions of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Lima, Ica, and Moquegua. According to Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), rainfall has reached critical levels, increasing the risk of river overflows and flooding.

The declaration allows the national government to step in with technical and operational support where regional and local authorities are no longer able to manage the situation. Heavy rains have already caused road blockages and isolated rural communities, prompting the activation of humanitarian aid delivery and the deployment of heavy machinery to clear rivers and transport routes.

Meteorological authorities warned that more districts could be added to the emergency list in the coming days, depending on the evolution of low-pressure systems in the Pacific region.
