Visitors arriving in Peru this winter may notice something unusual: temperatures along the coast, especially in Lima, are warmer than expected for this time of year. According to Peru's National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (SENAMHI), the current El Niño conditions are reducing the intensity of the typical winter cold.
In Lima, winter usually brings gray skies, high humidity, and cool temperatures. This year, however, warmer ocean waters have helped keep temperatures above seasonal averages, creating more pleasant conditions along much of Peru's central coast.
Meteorologists explain that while cloudy days and coastal fog will still occur, the cold is not expected to feel as intense as during a typical winter. Residents have already noticed the difference, with many days feeling warmer than usual despite officially being winter.
For travelers planning a trip to Lima and Peru's Pacific coast in the coming months, the milder weather could make outdoor activities, city tours, coastal walks, and visits to nearby attractions even more enjoyable. While a light jacket is still recommended, visitors may find the season more comfortable than they expect from a South American winter.
