Peru is preparing for a historic visit as Pope Leo XIV is expected to return to the country during the first half of November 2026. The announcement was made by President José María Balcázar following a meeting with the pontiff at the Vatican, where they discussed plans for the upcoming trip.
According to the president, the visit could include stops in Lima, Chiclayo, Piura, Cusco, Pucallpa, Puno, and Iquitos. While the Vatican has not yet released an official itinerary, the proposed route would take the pope to several regions where he lived, worked, and built strong connections with local communities.
Before becoming pope, Leo XIV spent more than two decades in Peru as an Augustinian missionary and later served as bishop of Chiclayo. He became a Peruvian citizen in 2015, making his relationship with the country especially meaningful. During the Vatican meeting, President Balcázar said the pope expressed enthusiasm about returning to Chiclayo, a city that played an important role in his pastoral life.
The expected visit is already generating interest across Peru and could attract visitors from around the world. For travelers, it may offer a unique opportunity to experience an important moment in the country's religious and cultural history while exploring some of Peru's most iconic destinations.
