Peru Launches Climate Action Guide for Sustainable Tourism Businesses

Peru has introduced its first Climate Action and Circularity Guide for Tourism Businesses and Destinations, a new tool designed to help the tourism sector reduce its environmental impact and improve long-term sustainability.

The guide was officially presented during the II Sustainable Tourism Congress held in Tarapoto and aims to support tourism companies, destination managers, and industry stakeholders in measuring, reducing, and managing their carbon footprint. It also promotes circular economy practices, such as better resource use, waste reduction, and more efficient operations.

The initiative was developed through the “Turismo Circular Perú” project, led by the Cámara Nacional de Turismo del Perú (CANATUR) with support from the European Union and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, in coordination with Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism and the Ministry of Environment. The goal is to help the country’s tourism industry align with international sustainability standards and growing traveler demand for responsible tourism.

The guide also provides practical methods for businesses to optimize resources, access climate financing, and strengthen competitiveness while moving toward a lower-carbon tourism model. This is especially important as more travelers look for destinations and services that prioritize environmental responsibility.
