Travelers planning a visit to Machu Picchu have a new opportunity to secure their tickets. Peru’s Ministry of Culture has released spaces that had remained blocked in the booking system due to reservations that were not completed with the required payment or confirmation.
The newly released spaces for the Inca Trail became available for purchase on September 16, starting at 9:00 a.m., through the official reservation system. According to the Ministry of Culture, the measure follows verification of the booking system, which found that unpaid reservations were temporarily reducing the number of spaces available to travelers and formal tourism operators.
This comes alongside a recent change to the way Machu Picchu entrance tickets are purchased. The previous reservation system has been replaced by direct sales with confirmed payment. Visitors now have a maximum of 15 minutes to complete the payment once they select their ticket, after which an unpaid ticket returns to the system and can be purchased by someone else.
The changes are intended to improve the availability of tickets and make the purchasing process more transparent. For travelers hoping to visit Machu Picchu or hike the Inca Trail, checking the official system may now reveal spaces that were previously unavailable.
