Peru's Ministry of Culture is evaluating new measures that could make visiting Machu Picchu more convenient while helping manage the growing number of travelers. The proposal includes increasing the site's daily visitor capacity and replacing in-person ticket sales with a digital system.
One of the main changes under review is the digitalization of the 1,000 tickets that are currently sold each day in Aguas Calientes. Officials say the new system would allow travelers to buy these tickets online instead of waiting in long lines, making the process easier and more predictable for visitors.
Authorities are also studying a possible increase in Machu Picchu's daily visitor limit. According to the Ministry of Culture, any decision will be based on technical studies to ensure the archaeological site remains protected while meeting tourism demand. No final changes have been approved yet.
If implemented, the new measures could improve the visitor experience by reducing queues and making trip planning more flexible. The Ministry of Culture has indicated that preserving Machu Picchu's cultural heritage will remain the top priority as it evaluates these proposals.
