The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu will reopen to tourists this Saturday, September 5, after being temporarily closed following unusual rainfall that affected several sections of the famous ancient route. The reopening was confirmed by the Directorate of Culture of Cusco and the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) after a technical inspection of the trail.
The inspection covered Routes 1, 2, and 3 of the Inca Trail network. In recent weeks, heavy rains caused landslides, rising streams, flooding, soil erosion, and damage to some bridges and facilities at the campsites. The temporary closure was intended to protect both visitors and the personnel working along the route.
With the reopening, maintenance work will continue on some sections of the trail. Staff from the Directorate of Culture of Cusco and Sernanp will work alongside residents of the Huayllabamba community to keep the route in suitable condition and help ensure the safety of visitors. Authorities have also agreed to implement short-, medium-, and long-term measures to address the effects of geological activity in some ravines and reduce potential risks along the route.
The Inca Trail remains one of the most distinctive ways to reach Machu Picchu, combining an ancient route with mountain landscapes and archaeological sites before arriving at the Inca citadel. Its reopening marks the return of one of Peru's best-known trekking experiences after several weeks of precautionary closure.
