Archaeologists Discover Inca Citadel in Peru 4 Times Larger Than Machu Picchu

A major archaeological discovery in southern Peru is getting attention after researchers revealed an ancient Inca site that is about four times larger than Machu Picchu.

The site, called T’aqrachullo, is located in the Espinar area of Cusco, on a high plateau above the Apurímac canyon. According to recent research featured by National Geographic, the ruins cover around 17.4 hectares, making it one of the largest Inca settlements documented in the region. Archaeologists have identified nearly 600 stone structures, including homes, ceremonial spaces, tombs, and storage areas, showing that this was once an important center for daily life, trade, and religious activities.

One of the discoveries that surprised researchers the most was the finding of nearly 3,000 small ornaments made of gold, silver, and copper. Specialists believe these pieces were sewn onto ceremonial clothing worn by members of the Inca elite during the final years of the empire, suggesting the site may have had a high political and spiritual importance.

Some researchers now believe T’aqrachullo could be linked to Ancocagua, a mysterious Inca citadel mentioned in old colonial records but never clearly identified. While studies are still ongoing, the discovery is already opening new questions about the final chapters of the Inca Empire and the many stories that may still be hidden in the mountains of southern Peru.
