Ancient Astronomical Structure Discovered at Áspero Archaeological Site

A new archaeological discovery in Peru is shedding light on the advanced knowledge of one of the oldest civilizations in the Americas.

Researchers working at the Áspero site, part of the ancient Caral civilization on Peru’s central coast, have uncovered a complex architectural structure believed to be linked to astronomical observation. The site, located in the Supe Valley north of Lima, was once a կարևոր fishing settlement dating back over 4,000 years.

According to specialists, the structure may have been used by trained individuals to observe celestial events and understand their relationship with the natural environment. This knowledge likely played an important role in organizing daily life, including activities such as fishing, resource management, and exchange with nearby agricultural communities.

The design of the structure suggests it could have been used to track solar or lunar cycles, possibly through the projection of shadows or alignment with the horizon. The discovery adds to growing evidence that the Caral civilization developed sophisticated scientific and environmental knowledge thousands of years ago.

Today, Áspero is part of ongoing archaeological research and preservation efforts that highlight Peru’s rich pre-Columbian heritage. Discoveries like this continue to reinforce the country’s importance as a destination for travelers interested in ancient history and early civilizations.
