Alternative Inca Trail Route Opens After Landslide in Cusco

Peru’s Ministry of Culture has enabled a temporary alternative route on the Inca Trail to ensure safe access to Machu Picchu after a recent landslide in the Cusco region.

The measure was introduced after heavy rains caused damage to part of the traditional trail network. In response, authorities rehabilitated a section known as Route 5 – Chachabamba (km 104), allowing controlled access while safety conditions are maintained.

Officials emphasized that the alternative route is a temporary solution while affected areas are being monitored and stabilized. Visitors are required to follow official guidelines and instructions from park rangers, especially during the rainy season when weather conditions can change quickly.

The Inca Trail is one of the most popular ways to reach Machu Picchu, with daily visitor limits in place to protect the site. Seasonal rains and occasional landslides are common in the Andes, and authorities regularly adjust access routes to maintain both safety and conservation standards.
