Direct international flights from Lima, including the popular Lima–Miami route, could be canceled in the coming weeks due to a new international airport fee introduced at Jorge Chávez International Airport.
LATAM Airlines has reportedly begun diverting direct routes from Lima to regional hubs in Brazil after the implementation of a new international Unified Airport Usage Fee (TUUA) of US$11.86, imposed by Lima Airport Partners. According to Peru’s pilots’ union (SIPLAP), flights to destinations such as Punta Cana and Cancún have already been affected, with Miami, Aruba, and Curaçao potentially next.
The fee applies to international connecting passengers and increases operational costs for airlines, making Lima less competitive compared to hubs like São Paulo. As a result, passengers may soon be required to connect through Brazil, significantly extending travel times.
The pilots’ union warns that the shift could harm Peru’s aviation sector, reduce passenger traffic at Jorge Chávez Airport, and lead to job losses across airlines and airport-related businesses. Discussions between authorities and industry stakeholders are ongoing, but no agreement has yet been reached.
