Where would you like to go in Peru?

For a first trip, Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu are a natural place to start. Lima gives you a taste of Peru's food, history and coastal life; Cusco brings you closer to the Andes and the country's Inca heritage. Then, of course, there is Machu Picchu.

If you have more days, you can take your trip in another direction. Arequipa is a wonderful addition if you enjoy beautiful historic cities and dramatic landscapes, especially with the Colca Canyon nearby. Puno and Lake Titicaca offer a very different experience, with high-altitude landscapes and long-standing Andean traditions.

And if you have enough time, why not add the Amazon rainforest? A few days in Puerto Maldonado can completely change the rhythm of your holiday.

The point is not to collect destinations. It is to choose the ones you would actually enjoy.

When is a good time to travel to Peru?

This depends largely on where you want to go.

The Andes are generally drier between May and October, making this a popular period for Cusco and Machu Picchu. November begins to bring more changes in the weather, while the wetter months arrive in the Andes towards the end of the year.

Lima is different: Its summer begins in December (although this 2026 with El Niño, it was summer all year), so if you are dreaming of combining your Peru holiday with sunny days along the coast, the end of the year can be particularly appealing.

The Amazon has its own climate patterns, too, so if you want to include the rainforest, it is worth considering your activities when choosing your travel dates. It's usually very hot, mixed with rain. 

There is still a lot happening in Peru this year

If you are reading this in September and thinking about traveling before 2026 ends, you still have some interesting dates to consider. The 23rd is the start of Spring in Peru and the 27th, is Tourism Day.

October is the month of the Señor de los Milagros, one of Peru's most important religious traditions. Lima becomes especially interesting during this time, with processions taking place during the month and the city's famous purple decorations and traditional foods making an appearance.

November 1 is All Saints' Day, a date traditionally spent remembering loved ones who have passed away. Visiting cemeteries and bringing flowers to family members' graves are part of the celebrations in different parts of Peru.

Then December brings the holiday season. December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, followed by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And, of course, there is New Year's Eve! In Peru, the 31st at night comes with its own traditions, including the famous twelve grapes, yellow clothing and plenty of local superstitions for starting the new year with good luck. Cusco and other cities have their own celebrations and atmosphere.

If you would like to experience Peru during Christmas or New Year's, this is a good time to start planning. Hotels, trains, entrance tickets and internal transportation all have to fit together, especially when your dates are fixed.

How early should you book your Peru holiday?

There is no magic number of months that applies to every trip.

If you are traveling to Cusco and Machu Picchu during a busy holiday period, booking earlier gives you more options for hotels, train schedules and entrance arrangements.

If your plans are more flexible, you may have more room to adjust your itinerary according to availability.
