Yesterday, May 8th, the world welcomed Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Prevost, an American-born bishop with strong ties to Peru. While much attention has been placed on his origins in Chicago, the people of Chiclayo, where he served as bishop for nearly two decades, are celebrating a historic spiritual connection.

In addition to his strong spiritual connection with the country, Robert Prevost also holds Peruvian nationality. During his years of service in Chiclayo, he obtained his Peruvian ID (DNI) and now has dual citizenship (American and Peruvian)—further deepening his bond and sense of belonging with Peru.

Why is everyone asking: Where is Chiclayo and why is it important?

After his election, Pope Leo XIV moved hearts with a brief but meaningful message in Spanish:

“Y si se me permite también una palabra, un saludo a todos aquellos y en modo particular a mi querida diócesis de Chiclayo en el Perú, donde un pueblo fiel ha acompañado a su obispo, ha compartido su fe y ha dado tanto, tanto para seguir siendo Iglesia de Jesucristo.”

In English:

“And if I may also say a word, a greeting to all those, and in a special way to my beloved Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, where a faithful people accompanied their bishop, shared their faith, and gave so much to continue being the Church of Jesus Christ.”
